Chilingulo, Mwanza triumph in PIM Golf
September 26 2011
It had to take 15 years for Clement Chilingulo to win the annual golf competition sponsored by Packaging Industries Limited (PIM).
He did it on 24th September 2011 at the Lilongwe GoIf Club (LGC) against the best golfers in the land, scoring 39 points in a stablefold format to win a golf bag.
His greatest competition among the 88 golfers, who converged on LGC, was his playing partner Sunil Godambe who had 38 points just like Rageish Thakor, but Godambe prevailed on count back.
Godambe was also nearest to the pin while Brian Coombes had the longest drive.
"This is a timely birthday present for me," said Chilingulo who turned 59 last Wednesday. I have participated in this tournament since it started 15 years ago in Mulanje, but never won it until today. It is a great feeling, I'm feeling today. I thank PIM and also my playing partners," he said.
In the ladies' category, Regina Mwanza was the winner. It was her seventh championship since she started playing Golf last year.
"I am humbled today. My playing partners have christened me 'Region' instead of Regina. They say I played like a man" she said attracting laughter from the gathering which included Malawi Defence Force (MDC) chief of staff Major General Msonthi and Tanzania High Commissioner to Malawi His Excellency Patrick Tsere.
Mwanza had 33 points and Karen Baylis had the longest drive while Sheila Chinkhandwe was nearest to the pin.
PIM marketing manager Nyakhoko Nsona promised to sponsor the competition again next year.
"We have alot of customers in Lilongwe who have shown great loyalty throughout the years and it is always a pleasure when we are here. We thank you for patronising the tournament today" said Nsona.
PIM donated K150 000 for maintenance of golf course as Malawi prepares to host the 2012 Zone IV golf. The money was received by LGC captain Neil Nyirongo, who expressed gratitude to PIM for its commitment to golf.
