October 31 2011
Misheck Esau beat a field of 54 golfers to win Packaging Industries Golf Tournament at Mulanje Golf Club on 29th October 2011.
Esau scored 44 points to overcome the opposition and win his first ever title in five years.
J. Suzi settled for second position with 40 points after counting out Richard Mkwapatira who was pushed to the third position.
The champion managed 10 pars, 7 bogeys and a double-bogey, but he owed his success to 10th hole's performance which offered him confidence to challenge for honours.
"I suffered a lot especially on hole number 10 because my first tee-shot went into the bush. However, with patience and wistful calculations, I managed to pick myself up from such a difficult position and make an excellent shot that went through the bunker to earn me a bogey."
"That awesome recovery from the difficult position taught me to be resilient; to stay focused even when I made a distressing mistake," he said.
Charles Merrick won the longest drive on the 7th hole as D. Mpanda got the nearest to the pin accolade on hole 15. Erasmus Chirambo emerged the best on front nine with 19 points while the Mulanje Golf Club captain Jones Katangwe landed the best back-nine award with 22 points.
In the 8-member ladies' category, Sheila Golowa won the title with 44 points. Teri Amaro counted out Doreen Mwenitete to take up the second place with 40 points.
A minute of silence was observed in respect of Thyolo Golf Club golfer Steve Mullan who died a couple of weeks ago. Mullan was Naming'omba Tea Estate's managing director.
PIM managing director Simon Itaye assured the golfers that the company would continue sponsoring the tournament.
